I going to start here with full disclosure, several months ago I looked at the review for RemiLore over at Nintendo World Report. I did not take notes of what was written there, nor do I remember what I read at the time. Any similarities between what they wrote and what I am writing are purely unintentional.

I have never written a game review before, but I have read many over the years from sites such as ign.com, blog.bestbuy.ca, nintendoworldreport.com and many others. I do not intend to copy their way of doing things, but some of their styles may influence the way I have formatted this.

Now, onto the review.

RemiLore: Lost Girl in the Lands of Lore is a hack and slash action adventure game with light Rogue elements. You originally play the story as Remi, a school girl who finds a magical tome that she calls Lore. Hence the name, RemiLore.

Each time you load a level the layout will be different than the last time you loaded that same level, but that’s about it. Each Act in the story mode is comprised of 4 levels, the last of which is a boss encounter. If you die you will restart from the first level in that Act.

Each level consists of several rooms in which you must defeat all the enemies in order to progress further. You will be assigned a score based on the time it took you to complete it, the amount of damage that you took, and how high of a combo you achieved during that room's combat. At the end of each level you will receive rewards based on how well you performed in these rooms.

There are six different weapon types available to you, but in my first progression through the story I finished with only 2 weapon types unlocked, and have since unlocked a third. I didn’t much care for the second weapon type that I unlocked, so I stuck with the starting weapon type throughout the story. Each weapon type comes with combos that you can wield, but for every weapon within each type the combos are the same. I found myself mostly using the same combo over and over again

All weapons also come with a magical skill for your character. You can purchase upgrades for these skills and even purchase new skills along the way using the candy that you pick up on your adventure. Early on it can be easy to spend all of your candy, but by the end you will probably find stock overflowing.

RemiLore has a cute, anime art style. Each Act of the game has a different design, but they all fit within the anime feel that the game has. The character voices for the game are very anime as well. At the start of and also part way through each level the game stops so that the characters can have a conversation. Hitting the skip option does not actually skip the conversation, it just quickly scrolls through it. If you die in an Act, even though you have already heard the characters go through their dialogue, the game forces you to go through it again. There are also points where the characters talk while you are in combat, but I did not find that it impeded the game in any way.

If you walk closely to the walls in the levels you will find that they become translucent so that you can still see where you are going. I found at times that if I moved too closely to the walls I would get stuck against something and have to move away in order to continue.

The loading times can also be a hassle. Between levels (and deaths) these load times feel just long enough to take me out of the experience, and loading the game from the Switch menu seems to take much longer than it should.

After you complete the game once you unlock multiple different options, some of which can make the game much more difficult, and some that provide more randomness to the game. There is also a multiplayer co-op mode, but as of yet I have been unable to try it.

My overall feeling of RemiLore is that it is a capable, but repetitive action adventure game. I was not playing very well in the early stages of the game and found myself dying repeatedly. I found it annoying to have to go through the dialogue every time I came across it, whether or not I had already experienced it. Despite this annoyance I would recommend RemiLore as a cute hack and slash action adventure game to play.
